Most importantly, the film can help us examine how we, as American, LDS people look at art вЂ“ and especially film вЂ“ in context with the basic principles of Christianity rather than a condemnation of other religions and cultures. As an LDS audience, we are spoiled to have a shorter-lived religious history, unencumbered with such conflict as the crusades and the doctrinal changes and challenges as those the Catholic faith has faced over the centuries. Religious and political hullabaloo aside, it is an interesting film that provokes viewers to examine their beliefs for consistency. Overall, вЂњDaVinciвЂќ is easy to watch and become engaged in despite its character flaws, perhaps because of the divine TautouвЂќs ultimate on-screen likeability, or perhaps because of the familiarity of Hanks as a solid actor. The film as a whole uses a subdued palette of grays and blues, which allows the art and architecture of the European museums and churches to soak up the limelight, even those made of gray stone or badly lit in the dark setting of the night-time Louvre. In addition to the sporadic historical montages, the editing is well executed, not self-conscious and mimics the simple jump-cut transitions of the screenplay-like novel. Technically, though, Howard knows his stuff. His character was never diabolical enough in the beginning, which makes the first scenes of suspense less effective. Bezu Fache (Jean Reno) was also impressive as the incessantly fierce investigator and nemesis of Langdon, though, again, passed over in the rush to solve the mystery and allow time for some excellent time-overlap montage.

Few actors so easily evoke the refined Englishman as McKellen, though his physical description was nothing like the bookвЂќs character. Though there is a connection between Langdon and Neveu, the pairing of Hanks and Tautou seemed almost as forced as the foreign accents of Silus (Paul Bettany) and Bishop Aringarosa (Alfred Molina).ДЄmong the more impressive performances were those of Bettany as Silus, the frightening вЂњsoldier of God,вЂќ and Ian McKellen as the grail-questing Sir Teabing. It skips much of the development of Neveu as an intelligent woman caught in a web of encrypted mystery, and makes her seem more like one of LangdonвЂќs infatuated student-admirers.

Rather than seeing more of NeveuвЂќs life and letting her intelligent explanations stand alone to define her, Howard seems to zoom in on the Opus Dei rituals in order to make the audience gasp. The screenplay seemed to devote time to what вЂњThe DaVinci CodeвЂќ author Dan Brown wisely approached as a minimalist. Unlike most films вЂ“ which choose between a character-driven and a plot-driven emphasis вЂ“ вЂњDaVinciвЂќ leaned too much on suspense for the sake of suspense. ItвЂќs like the Yankees: a team of superstars.

The choice to use a French woman to play a French woman was a good one, but it seems that Ron Howard had access to such a large, talented cast that no one could noticeably shine. While the problem of LangdonвЂќs character may have been more due to casting, the limited movie time frame contributes to the simplicity of Neveu, despite her being a brilliant cryptologist breaking the barriers of the mystery and a woman with a surprising and complex past that crescendos into the most exciting part of the plot. And it isnвЂќt as if Tom Hanks is too cool to be a Harvard professor. The result is a Langdon who seems too similar to that two-time Oscar winner who is a decidedly capable actor yet fails to portray himself as more nerdy. Nor does the filmвЂќs audience see him cringe during the embarrassing introduction at the lecture which opens both film and novel that mentions his female students describing his voice as вЂњchocolate for the ears.вЂќ The mention of a man with such a voice hardly conjures up an image of Tom Hanks. For example, the film adapts Langdon without his tweed suit, which goes a long way in characterization. Like any film adapted from a book, many descriptive details about symbology professor Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou) are left out. вЂњThe Da Vinci CodeвЂќ doesnвЂќt fail to entertain, but what it does lack is characterization.
